Yes, happy campers, there’s a difference between a campervan and a motorhome. The difference, depending on how good the campervan is, might be subtle. Still, consider it like the difference between staying at the Ritz and a Hyatt hotel. Both are nice, but one definitely has the edge over the other.
At Ariescape, we’re experts in motorhomes, and our services make hiring a motorhome in Scotland (from us) easy. We’re also experts in the difference between motorhomes and campervans.
Read on for the ultimate guide to the difference between motorhomes and campervans.
What Are Motorhomes?
To understand the difference, it’s best to understand what the options are.
We’ll start with motorhomes, because they’re our passion. A motorhome is a home with a motor. The clue is in the name. By definition, a motorhome is actually a ‘self-propelled recreational vehicle‘. We prefer to call them a home on wheels.
These are often more luxurious (they’re luxury from us), spacious, and better equipped to actually feel like you’ve got a home on wheels. Think fully equipped kitchens, Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, a functioning bathroom, a spacious living area, and top-of-the-range driving aids.
A motorhome gives you the freedom to travel to beautiful places, like Scotland, without limitations and in style and comfort. You should get top-notch living facilities, which means the only thing you need to worry about is exploring.
They’re the Ritz of the ‘self-propelled recreational vehicles’.
What Are Campervans?
Campervans are a step down – nobody can deny that. Now, we’re a motorhome company, but we won’t slander campervans entirely. They’re often the cheaper option that suits so many travellers. And like Aldi trying to replicate other big brands, they’re good, but they’re not as good as the original.
A campervan is different in so many ways. As the name suggests, it’s a van converted into a living space for travelling and camping. Now, some of these transformations are phenomenal, especially people who take on the project themselves at home and convert a simple van into a liveable space.
That being said, they’re small, often don’t have cooking spaces (and if they do, it’s basic), you might not be able to stand up in them, and they’re not always big enough for more than two people. They also might not have running water, and we’d be surprised if they have a proper bathroom. It depends on the model of the van, the conversion, and how tall you are. If you’re lucky enough to be in the over 6ft club, standing up just isn’t going to happen.
They’re good, yes. But they’re the Hyatt Regency of the two options.
The Difference Between Motorhomes and Campervans
Well, we think we’ve explained the difference between the two in the individual sections, but it’s worth us talking about how the glaringly obvious differences will impact your holiday.
Travelling in a motorhome means not having to worry about anything. You have your home on wheels, including a bathroom with a shower. Some models might not have a shower, but ours do. You can cook, clean, clean yourself, watch TV with Wi-Fi, and actually stand up in a motorhome. The most you need to think about is the next place you’ll stop and whether you can fit your motorhome in a space (they’re big).
Campervans let you enjoy life and explore with some freedom, but you’re likely going to be checking if a campsite has wash facilities, and you might find yourself pulling over at the next McDonald’s you can find to relieve yourself. If you want to travel on a budget and you don’t mind a more confined space with limited facilities, then they’re still a great option.
Which is The Right Option For You?
The right option for you depends on your budget, your travel needs, how long you’re travelling for, and the type of experience you want.
Here’s why you should say yes to luxury motorhome hire:
- You get a proper kitchen to whip up gourmet meals wherever you stop
- You can actually shower and feel clean every day of your trip
- You can stand up, sit down, and stretch without feeling like you’re in a sardine can
- You get spacious living and sleeping areas that feel like a real home
- You can stay connected with built-in Wi-Fi and smart TV options
- You travel in style and comfort with top-of-the-line interiors and driving tech
- You wake up with views you would pay a fortune for at a hotel, without even leaving your bed
Choosing between a campervan and a motorhome is like choosing between a good trip and a great one. Both will get you from A to B, but only one will make the journey feel like a first-class adventure. At Ariescape, we believe you deserve the Ritz experience every time. So why settle for less when you can have it all?
