A failure to plan is a plan to fail – that sounded a bit parentesque of us, didn’t it?
But when it comes to Scotland, you have to be a bit parentesque. We know you want to make the most of your vacation. There’s nothing worse than going on a trip, unpacking your suitcase, and realizing you have not packed your waterproofs.
Scotland is a dream destination, and we want to help you make the most of us. We don’t only offer the best 5*, luxury Scottish motorhomes, we have plenty of advice to go with it. Read on to find out more.
The Scottish Outdoor Exploring Essentials
Let’s start with the essentials and get one thing straight – Scotland’s weather is not for the weak during the coming wetter months, shall we call them. We can give it a bit more praise during the summer, but in autumn, winter, and spring, it’s a rollercoaster ride. But at the same time, you
Packing the essentials is something we know all about.
- Warm Clothing: OK, we lied a little – even in summer, Scotland can be wet and chilly, especially on the west coast of Scotland. In Glen Etive, an average of 3,300 mm of rain falls annually. Bring base layers, long John, jumpers, and a good-quality raincoat. Oh, and a hat to keep your ears warm!
- Waterproofs: As you can see – a lot of Scotland is wet. And if you’re going to the west coast, it’s really really wet. Sudden rain showers are the norm, so it’s not only a raincoat you’ll need. Waterproof everything is advisable!
- Hiking Boots: Hopefully you’ll be having a hike or two – Scotland has some of the best hiking routes on the planet. With 1540 trails across Scotland, a good pair of walking boots will take you far. And don’t forget to wear them in before you go! Hiking with blisters takes all the fun away.
- Thick Socks: Don’t underestimate the power of a good pair of thick socks – your cold toes will thank us later! And they’re essential for preventing blisters.
- Umbrella: Have we said it already? Scotland is wet. A sturdy brolly that can withstand the Scottish winds and rain will come in handy almost every day, depending on the time of year.
Check the weather the week before you pack for a more definitive list of clothing items to take.
A Well-Stocked First Aid Kit
We don’t know why people leave a first aid kit off the list.
Scottish vacations are outdoorsy, and we’d say there’s more chance for something to go wrong. Not a leg falling off wrong but grazes or a blister here and there isn’t uncommon.
Your first aid kit should include:
- Bandages and Gauze
- Antiseptic Wipes
- Pain Relief (headaches ruin the vibe!)
- Antihistamines
- Blister Plasters
- Prescription Medications
The last one might sound silly – but you’d be surprised how many people go on vacation without prescription medicines like inhalers. Nobody wants to go hiking through Scotland without their inhaler!
Google Maps and Real Maps
Google Maps is great, but not always reliable in remote areas. Signal is ‘spotty’ in Scotland, shall we say. In our opinion, we’d bring the following backups:
- Paper Maps
- Guidebooks
And if you don’t know how to read a map, we’d have a quick lesson (YouTube) before you go. It’s not rocket science, but most of us are out of touch with finding our way without Google Maps. Still, Google Maps will work well in most areas in Scotland and our motorhomes have unlimited 5G connection to keep you connected as much as Scotland will allow.
Entertainment for Downtime
Yes, you’ll spend most of your time outdoors, but you’ll need something to keep you entertained when the day is done. And if you have kids, it’s even more essential.
All our 5* luxury motorhomes come with a smart TV, an Amazon Firestick, and unlimited 5G internet – we’ve got your Netflix and chills covered.
Still, we’d recommend bringing the following for entertainment:
- Books or E-Readers
- Board Games or Cards (Beware, Uno could ruin your vacation)
- Music or Podcasts
We hope you will spend most of your time outdoors, but we know you’ll find it effortless to feel entertained in one of our luxury motorhomes and in Scotland, in general.
Our list of essentials will make your Scottish motorhome vacation one to remember. The freedom to travel across Scotland in a luxury motorhome, taking in everything the beauty of Scotland has to offer, is an experience like no other. Start planning your journey today!
