Because it’s almost winter.
Do you think we should end the article here?
We won’t – but it’s indeed almost winter. You can definitely feel a hint of winter in the air and the September showers are on their way. And if you go into the supermarkets, they’re already advertising for Christmas! Too soon? We think so.
Technically, winter doesn’t begin until the 21st of September, but if you know anything about Scotland, it’s winter vibes from November. There’s frost on the ground in the highlands and the Christmas light switch-ons come thick and fast. There’s truly never a better time to see Scotland…unless the rain and cold isn’t your vibe. Still, even with the rain, there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy Scotland – we’ve written an article all about it.
If you need more reasons, read on for why we think you should start planning your winter Scottish motorhome holiday.
The Best Motorhome and Campsite Deals
Motorhomes will sell out – we’ve noticed motorhome hire in Scotland is the busiest during winter and summer.
If you want the best motorhome deal, now is the perfect time to book. They can and do quickly sell out and you will notice they’re more expensive closer to the date you want to travel. Sometimes you can catch a last-minute deal, but why risk it and wait? It might not be that they’re more expensive, but they simply might not be available. Winter motorhome holidays in Scotland are popular.
And then you have to think about where you’ll park the motorhome. In Scotland, you technically can park your motorhome anywhere – but this is Scotland, your wintertime motorhome holiday deserves more than a stop at the side of the road. Campsites are the best, in our opinion. They’re often nestled in the best locations in Scotland with some of the most mind blowing views you’ll ever lay your eyes on.
If you want our recommendation, these are some of the best campsites:
- Horgabost Campsite Isle of Harris
- Port Mor Campsite Isle of Islay
- The Lazy Duck Nethy Bridge
- Tantallon Caravan & Camping Park East Lothian
You Can See The Best of Scotland
Again, you can’t go to Scotland without planning. There’s so much to see that we know you’ll want to come back for more, but you might as well make it magical the first time around.
But don’t worry, we know it’s tricky to pick where to go. Absolutely everywhere you go will steal your heart in Scotland. Granted, in winter, some locations are better than others:
- The Scottish Highlands (be prepared for the snow!)
- Isle of Skye
- Edinburgh
- Loch Ness
Winter Events and Attractions
Scotland comes alive with winter festivities – nothing beats walking through Scottish towns and cities in the winter with the twinkling Christmas lights, dazzling shop windows with their best Christmas displays, or the inevitable Scottish snow coating the Scottish Highlands.
Scotland isn’t all about Christmas, but we would recommend going at the end of November/December. The festive Christmas markets are some of the best in the world. We love the Glasgow and Edinburgh Christmas Market!
And don’t get us started on the pubs during winter. It doesn’t get much better than sitting in a Scottish pub sipping a hot toddy (whisky) when the air is crisp outside. Or you could travel at the end of December for the Hogmanay celebrations for fireworks and street parties.
We could keep listing things for you to do in winter in Scotland, but come and see for yourself!
Prepare for Winter Travel Conditions
We’re not about to get too serious on you, but you do need to prepare for the winter travel conditions. Our motorhomes are more than equipped to handle the Scottish weather, but the question is, are you?
The conditions on the road will change rapidly, and we think planning a route is advisable – especially through the Cairngorms. Sticking to the main road, avoiding driving late at night, and not taking any risks if there’s snow on the ground is essential, especially if it’s your first wintertime Scottish motorhome holiday.
It might sound prehistoric, Mesozoic Era of us to say, but don’t rely on Google Maps. Take an old-school AA roadmap! 95% of Scotland has an internet connection, so don’t find yourself stuck in an area that doesn’t have it.
We promise you’ll enjoy a wintertime Scottish motorhome holiday. The freedom to enjoy the open roads and see the best of Scotland in a comfortable, luxurious motorhome is the perfect way to experience Scotland. There are too many locations to visit to stay in one spot! Get planning your wintertime Scottish motorhome holiday now.
